What to expect on your first appointment
Following an appointment booking, Helen will contact your veterinary surgeon to gain consent for the physiotherapy treatment to commence and obtain any relevant medical history.
The first appointment will be at your home or yard at a mutually convenient time and appointment times can be flexible, to work around the owner’s schedule.
Initial assessment will last for approximately 90 minutes, during which time Helen will discuss with you the full history of your animal, their activities, previous injuries and general health and well being.
The animal's conformation will be assessed, whilst their gait may be observed at different paces, on straight lines, circles and on different surfaces if required, to pick up on any abnormalities in movement.

Your horse's movement may need to be assessed in hand, ridden and on the lunge, whilst dogs may be observed both on and off the lead, carrying out general daily activities such as stair climbing and sit to stand.
An overall assessment of your animals muscles and range of joint movement will be carried out, identifying any issues.
A rehabilitation plan will then be developed specific to your animals needs. The number and frequency of treatments can differ greatly depending on the condition.
If appropriate, Helen will also be able to provide you with ‘homework’ exercises which she will demonstrate clearly for you to practise with your animal in between physiotherapy visits. These may include simple therapeutic exercises or the use of one of the electrotherapeutic machines which can be hired out to the owner if required. Input from the owner between visits can help enormously with the rehabilitation process.
If necessary, follow up treatments may last anything from 30mins – 60mins. In order to give a thorough assessment and provide appropriate treatment, consultations are not set to a defined time limit. Appointment durations will depend upon individual cases.
